Meet the CEO
Mr Richard Maleka (Chief Executive Officer)
Richard Maleka has business interests in the energy sector. Sun Electricity is a 100% black-owned business. Richard Maleka is a self-made entrepreneur of note. Mr Maleka built Sunlec from a company that was merely selling products to a company that provides energy solutions. His curiosity with renewable energy enabled him to venture more into the industry. Intrigued by his first encounter with solar panels, he inquired on the operation of solar. After seeing solar panels’ potential, it became a dream to fulfill, as the area where he was residing at that time had no electricity. He approached a shop owner and told him that he believed he could sell hundreds of these products, with a belief that it’s the solution for their communities. He then sold hundreds of solar panels and installed them in many houses at a time when solar panels were not as popular.
Richard became one of the pioneers in the solar industry, installing systems for schools, clinics and houses. He then implemented the first solar home system pilot project with the Department of Minerals and Energy in the 1990s at Folovhodwe in Limpopo, as well as various Departments and Government institutions like IDT, Gauteng Agriculture and Rural Development.
In 2006 he was trained by the Austrian Development Agency in Austria for heating networks and parabolic steam generators. In 2012 he enrolled at the University of Cape Town, where he obtained a certificate in Project Administration. He has trained many students who are now playing a meaningful role in the electrical industry. Through Richard, Sunlec has implemented one of the first PV solar plants for DBSA in 2009 and to date it is still in operation. Sunlec continues to play a significant role in accessing electricity via Off-Grid solutions. One of INEP programme through the Depart of minerals and energy with current estimate connections of up to 8000 in Eastern Cape and KZN.
